99.40

又五分律云。嚼已應洗棄之。以恐蟲食故死。又三千威儀云。用楊枝有五事。一斷當如度。二破當如法。三嚼頭不得過三分。四梳齒當中三齒。五當汁澡自用。

The Mahīśāsaka-vinaya also says: "After chewing, one should wash it and discard it, out of fear that insects might eat it and die." The *Sanqian weiyi* also says: "In using a willow twig there are five rules: first, cutting it must conform to the measure; second, splitting it must conform to the rule; third, the chewed end must not exceed three-tenths [of the twig]; fourth, combing the teeth must hit the middle three teeth; and fifth, one should wash with the juice and use it for oneself."
