Furthermore, the Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: At that time, the monks were troubled by snakes entering their rooms, and monks not yet free from desire were terrified. The Buddha said: 'It is permitted to frighten them away, or catch them in a bamboo tube and discard them, or tie them with a cord, place them on the ground, and release them.' When rats entered a room, they made a cage to take them out and discard them. When troubled by scorpions, centipedes, and millipedes entering the room, they could wrap them in rags, lumps of mud, or a broom, take them out, and release them outside. If rooms were troubled by bats at night or swallows entering by day, the Buddha said: 'It is permitted to weave open-meshed screens to obstruct them, or make window latticework to block them.' At that time, an old and sick monk picked off lice and threw them on the ground. The Buddha said: 'It should not be so. It is permitted to catch them in a vessel, or pick them up with cotton; if the lice crawl out, one should make a tube to hold them; if the lice crawl out of the tube, one should make a lid to stop it.' (Depending on cold or heat, provide greasy food to nurture them.)
