Furthermore, the Dharmaguptaka-vinaya states: At that time, the monks were troubled by snakes entering their rooms. The monks who were not yet free from desire were terrified. The Buddha said, 'I permit scaring them off; or you may put them in a bamboo tube and discard them; or bind them with a cord, place them on the ground, and release them.' When rats enter the rooms, make traps to catch them, carry them out, and release them. When troubled by scorpions, centipedes, and house centipedes entering the rooms, wrap and discard them using worn-out cloths, lumps of mud, or brooms, and release them outside. If in the rooms one is troubled by bats at night or swallows entering by day, the Buddha said, 'I permit weaving lattice screens to block them, or making window lattices to obstruct them.' At that time, an old, sick monk picked lice and threw them on the ground. The Buddha said, 'You should not do so. I permit putting them into a vessel, or picking them up with cotton and placing them inside. If the lice crawl out, you should make a tube to hold them; if the lice come out of the tube, you should make a lid to plug it.' (Depending on the cold or heat, nourish them by adding greasy food.)
