爾時世尊在毘舍離國。時諸離奢乘象馬車乘輦輿。捉持刀劍。來欲見世尊。彼留刀杖在寺外。入內問訊世尊。時白衣持刀劍來寄諸比丘藏。畏慎不敢受。佛言。為檀越牢堅固藏舉者聽。

At that time, the World-Honoured One was in the country of Vaiśālī. At that time, the Licchavis, riding on elephants, horses, and carriages, bearing swords and spears, came wishing to see the World-Honoured One. They left their weapons outside the monastery and entered to pay respects to the World-Honoured One. At that time, laypeople holding knives and swords came to leave them with the monks for safekeeping. The monks were fearful and dared not accept them. The Buddha said: 'It is permitted to store and safeguard them securely for the dānapatis.'
