爾時世尊。在毘舍離國時諸離奢。乘象馬車乘輦輿。捉持刀劍來。欲見世尊。彼留刀杖在寺外。入內問訊世尊。時諸白衣持刀劍來。寄諸比丘藏。畏慎不敢受。佛言。為檀越牢堅固藏。舉者聽。

At that time, the Bhagavat was in the country of Vaiśālī. At that time, the Licchavis came riding on elephants, horses, carriages, and palanquins, bearing knives and swords, wishing to see the Bhagavat. They left their knives and staves outside the monastery, entered inside, and paid their respects to the Bhagavat. At that time, laypeople came carrying knives and swords and entrusted them to the monks for safekeeping. Wary and cautious, [the monks] did not dare accept them. The Buddha said, 'I permit storing them securely for the sake of the dānapatis when they offer them.'
