Thereupon the brāhmaṇa, having heard this, aroused the mind [for awakening], left the household life, and attained the path of an arhat. Furthermore, the Ratnagotravibhāga states: 'For the sake of six kinds of persons the Three Jewels are spoken of: first, the Tamer; second, the Dharma of the Tamer; third, the disciples of the Tamer. What are the six kinds of persons? First, those of the Mahāyāna; second, those of the Middle Vehicle; third, those of the Hīnayāna; fourth, those who believe in the Buddha; fifth, those who believe in the Dharma; sixth, those who believe in the Saṃgha.' Furthermore, the Saṅghāṭa-sūtra says: 'At that time the bodhisattva Sarvaśūra addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honoured One, through what causes and conditions did the sentient beings of this assembly come to arouse bodhi?" The Buddha said: "Sarvaśūra, in the past, countless asaṃkhyeya kalpas ago, there was a Buddha, a World-Honoured One, named Ratnaguṇa. At that time I was a young brāhmaṇa (māṇava). The sentient beings of this assembly who abide in the Buddha's wisdom were in that former time all among the deer. At that time I made a vow: 'May I cause all such deer to abide in the Buddha's wisdom.' When the deer heard this, they immediately all made the vow to attain likewise. Sarvaśūra, through those roots of good, the great assembly of this gathering shall attain anuttarā [samyak-saṃbodhi]."'
