As the Shan gongjing jing states: The Buddha told Ānanda, “If someone hears even a single four-line verse from another, and copies it or writes it on bamboo or silk, and for many kalpas carries that upādhyāya, ācārya, and others upon their shoulders, or carries them on their back, or bears them upon their head, constantly carrying them as they walk, and further presents all manner of musical instruments to make offerings to this teacher—even by doing such things, they would still not be able to fully repay the teacher's kindness. If in future ages one gives rise to a disrespectful mind toward their teacher and upādhyāya, constantly speaking of their faults, I call that folly; they will undergo immense suffering, and in future ages will certainly fall into the evil destinies. Therefore, Ānanda, I instruct you all to always practice a mind of reverence and respect. You will attain such supreme Dharma as this—namely, the profound Dharma of cherishing and honoring the Three Jewels.”
