The Buddha addressed Maudgalyāyana: "Go to my father the King, and say to him, 'When I was a boy, I shed four front teeth and bade my father the King to gather and keep them for me. Now they must be kept in the final age to safeguard my bequeathed Dharma.'" Maudgalyāyana followed his orders, took them, and came to present them to the World-Honoured One. The Buddha addressed the Buddhas who had arrived from all directions and his emanated Buddhas: "You should each bestow one tooth and one vajra stūpa." He commanded all ghosts, spirits, and dragon kings: "Within the span of a finger-snap, each of you fashion a vajra stūpa to house the four front teeth." The Buddhas who had arrived from the ten directions and my emanated Buddhas all bestowed their tooth-stūpas upon me, and ordered the dragon king Sāgara to collect them and make offerings to them within the great ocean.
