Again, in the kingdom of Kucha, north of the city on the eastern border in front of a heavenly shrine, there was a great dragon pool. Dragons altered their shapes and copulated with mares, thereby giving birth to dragon-colts; only then could they be tamed and harnessed. For this reason, this country produces many fine horses. It is heard from past records: in recent times there was a king named Jinhua. His governance and teachings were discerning, moving the dragons to serve as his mount. When the king was about to pass away, his whip touched its ear, whereupon it immediately hid away, down to the present day. There were no wells in the city, so they took water from that pool. Dragons transformed into humans and had intercourse with various women, giving birth to sons who were valiant and swift, able to run as fast as galloping horses. Thus gradually permeated, all the people became of dragon seed. Relying on their strength, they acted aggressively and did not obey the royal commands. The king then secretly drew in the Turks to kill these people; young and old were all slaughtered, leaving virtually none alive. The city is now desolate and overgrown, with human habitation cut off. (The above two evidential accounts are drawn from Master Xuanzang's *Biography*.)
