Sun Ce of the Han, having pacified Kuaiji, led his troops to welcome the Han emperor. At that time, the Daoist master Yu Ji was in Ce’s army. When they encountered a severe drought, the waterway for the boats was blocked. Ce personally went out to inspect and spur on the army, and often saw that many officers and soldiers were at Ji’s quarters. Filled with fury, he said: “Am I inferior to Ji?” He arrested Ji, bound him, and placed him in the blazing sun, commanding him to make rain fall; if he could not, he would be executed. Within moments, clouds and torrential rain poured down, and before long, the streams and ravines overflowed. Everyone came to congratulate him and pleaded for Ji to be spared death. Ce grew all the more enraged and resolved to have him killed. Because of this, Ce felt deep remorse and sorrow, and seemed repeatedly to see Ji's apparition. Later, while out hunting, Ce was wounded by assassins. As his treatment was on the verge of curing him, he drew a mirror to look at himself and saw Ji in the mirror. When he turned around, there was nothing. This happened two or three times. Thereupon he smashed the mirror and let out a great cry; his wounds all burst open, and he died in a moment.
