Furthermore, the Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya says: All the seven assemblies of the monastic and lay must strain water before drinking and using it. If the water has been strained, make someone who can see the fine lines in their palm examine it thoroughly. The time of examining should be as long as an elephant carrying a bamboo cart turning around; only when one knows there are no [insects] should it be used. Have a trustworthy person be taught to strain it; if someone is not trustworthy, strain it oneself. If insects are found, take them back to the original source where the water was drawn and place them there. If it is far or near to the source and there is a pond, and if the water in the pond or well does not dry up for seven days, put the insects into it. If one knows water has insects, one must not lend a vessel and rope to others [without warning]. If there are insects in a pond or river, one may call out, saying: “This water has insects.” If asked, answer: “Elder, see for yourself.” If they are close friends or fellow disciples, tell them: “There are insects here; you should strain the water before using it.”
