Furthermore, the Daśabhāṇavāra Vinaya relates: There were two bhikṣus who had never seen the Buddha. Traveling a long way from the north together to Śrāvastī to see the World-Honoured One, on the road they were parched with thirst and encountered water with insects. The one who broke the precepts said: “We can drink it together.” The one who maintained the precepts said: “There are insects in the water; how can we drink it?” The precept-breaker said: “If I do not drink, I will surely die of thirst and not be able to see the Buddha.” He then drank and went on. The one who upheld the precepts carefully guarded the precepts and did not drink; he thereupon died of thirst. He was immediately born in the Heaven of the Thirty-Three with a complete body, and went first to where the Buddha was, bowing his head to his feet. The Buddha preached the Dharma for him, and he attained the purity of the Dharma-eye; after receiving the Three Refuges, he returned to heaven. The one who had drank the water arrived later at the Buddha's place. The Buddha was preaching the Dharma for the four assemblies, and he parted his robe to reveal his golden body: “Foolish man! You wished to see my physical body. Why were you not like the one who upheld the precepts, who first saw my Dharma-body, the body of wisdom?” The Buddha said: “From this day forward, if a bhikṣu travels more than twenty li without a water-straining bag, he commits an offense. If he does not have one himself, but an agreeable companion has one, he is permitted to go.”
