Furthermore, the ten unwholesome courses of action of body, speech, and mind all have preliminary and subsequent retinues. What does this mean? For instance, a person gives rise to the thought of wanting to terminate the life of this sentient being, and consequently proceeds further to terminate the lives of other sentient beings; or, wishing to sacrifice to the heavens, slaughters sentient beings and forthwith seizes another's possessions; or, wishing to kill that person, moreover commits sexual misconduct with his wife; having generated such a thought, he further causes that wife to kill her husband herself; and further, with various kinds of divisive speech, breaks up that person's relatives, and at no time is he truthful; regarding the spoiled possessions, he gives rise to greedy thoughts; toward that person, he again gives rise to angry thoughts; for the sake of killing that person, he generates such wrong views, increasing wrong views in order to cut off his life; and further wishes to kill his wife, sons, daughters, and so forth. In such sequential order, the ten kinds of unwholesome courses of action are fully completed. Such actions as these are called the preliminary retinue. One should know that all ten unwholesome courses of action are likewise like this.
