Third: wishing to seek long life, remaining in the world without end, and escaping sickness and death; though life is extremely short, harboring worries for ten thousand years; with few years of life but manifold anxieties, failing to examine impermanence, indulging freely in the five desires, letting one's mind run wild; killing, stealing, debauchery, engaging in divisive speech, harsh speech, lying, and frivolous talk, having greed, jealousy, and wrong views, being unfilial to parents, disobeying teachers and friends, slighting elders, and rebelling against morality; aspiring to vast wealth, believing it can last forever, slandering the sacred path, unmatched in evil, sighing toward heaven and striding alone, longing for worldly glory, not understanding the causes and conditions of the world inside and out, not discerning the combination of causes and conditions of the four great elements, like a magician; failing to comprehend the generations that have arisen in ancient and modern times, refusing to accept conversion and guidance, not knowing whence life comes nor where death returns, setting one's mind on heaven and earth and believing them to be one's own domain—yet when the retribution of impermanence arrives, like wind blowing away clouds, while still hoping and thinking of long life, life suddenly ends without being able to master it: wishing this not to be so is utterly unattainable.
