Thereupon the brahmacārin's mind was immediately opened to comprehension, and he subsequently attained the path-trace (srotāpanna). Kneeling long, he received the precepts and became a pure-faith layman (upāsaka): not killing, not stealing, not committing adultery, not deceiving, upholding filial piety, and not becoming intoxicated. Joyfully he made obeisance to the Buddha and departed. Thus the texts say: "The five colors blind the eyes; the five tones deafen the ears; the five flavors deaden the palate." Great anger harms yin; great joy ruins yang. Fair beauty is the axe that cuts down nature; fine delicacies are the poison that rots the body. One who can awaken to this principle is a great master.
