Furthermore, the Bodhisattvabhūmi states: 'If a bodhisattva knows that someone has wrong views and seeks faults in the Dharma, he does not transmit the Dharma to him nor give him scripture scrolls. If someone by nature covets wealth and would sell scripture scrolls, he also does not give him the Dharma. If someone, having obtained scripture scrolls, would conceal them and not manifest them, he also does not give him the Dharma. If it is not a meaning understandable by that person, he also does not give him the Dharma. If it is not a meaning understandable by that person, he also does not give it to him. If it is a meaning understandable by him, and regarding this scripture scroll he already understands its meaning, then he takes the scripture and gives it according to what he delights in. If he does not yet understand the meaning, he must study it himself. Furthermore, knowing that others possess such a scripture, he points out its location to him, or copies it again and gives it to him. The bodhisattva should examine his own mind: if he has even the slightest stinginess with the Dharma, he should take the scripture and give it to him for the sake of the gift of Dharma. I would rather, on account of the gift of Dharma, be foolish and mute in the present life; for the sake of eliminating afflictions one should still give, how much more so when it serves as a skillful means for future wisdom!'
