If a disciple of the Buddha steals oneself, encourages someone to steal, steals by expedient means; steals through the karma of stealing, the methods of stealing, the causes of stealing, or the conditions of stealing; or steals by mantra; down to the belongings of ghosts and spirits, of owners, or of bandits and thieves, all material goods—one must not intentionally steal even a single needle or blade of grass. Yet the bodhisattva ought to give rise to the Buddha-nature, a filial and obedient mind, and a compassionate mind, constantly helping all people generate merit and generate happiness. If, on the contrary, one steals others' goods, this is the bodhisattva's second pārājika offense.
