Those people who train well should train in these ten prātimokṣas of the bodhisattva. Among them, one must not transgress even a speck of dust's worth, let alone transgressing the ten precepts completely. If one transgresses them, one cannot generate the bodhicitta in this present life, and one also loses the rank of king and the rank of wheel-turning king (cakravartin); one also loses the rank of bhikṣu and bhikṣuṇī; and one loses the marvelous fruition of the eternal Buddha-nature across the ten determinations, the ten nourishments, the ten vajras, and the ten grounds—all are lost, and one falls into the three evil destinies, not hearing the names of parents or the Three Jewels for two or three kalpas. Therefore, one should not transgress even one. All of you bodhisattvas who are training now, will train in the future, and have trained in the past: you should train in these ten precepts and reverently uphold them. The chapter on the Eighty Thousand Deportments will explain this at length (after training in these ten precepts, there are also forty-eight minor dharmas, all of which must be trained in; because the text is extensive, they are not recounted here, and students should consult that text).
