The Buddha said, 'By refraining from stealing, one obtains ten kinds of merits. What are the ten? First, one is endowed with great retribution and is decisive in handling affairs. Second, all one's material possessions are not shared by others. Third, they are not shared with the five houses. Fourth, the four assemblies of people love and respect one without feeling sated. Fifth, when traveling in all directions, there are no hindrances. Sixth, one comes and goes without fear. Seventh, one takes joy in giving. Eighth, without seeking wealth and treasures, one quickly obtains them naturally. Ninth, wealth obtained does not disperse. Tenth, upon the dissolution of the body and the end of life, one is reborn in wholesome destinies. Virtuous ones, this is called obtaining ten kinds of merits by refraining from stealing. If one can dedicate these roots of goodness toward unsurpassable bodhi, before long, when this person reaches bodhi, in that land there will be a complete abundance of various flower and fruit trees and forests, clothing, and necklace ornaments; rare and marvelous treasures will completely fill it.'
