The Buddha said, 'By refraining from sexual misconduct, one obtains ten kinds of merits. What are the ten? First, one attains the discipline of the faculties and is decisive in handling affairs. Second, one comes to abide in purity detached from desire. Third, one does not afflict others. Fourth, the multitude of people rejoice. Fifth, the multitude of people take pleasure in beholding one. Sixth, one is able to arouse vigor. Seventh, one sees the faults of saṃsāra. Eighth, one constantly delights in giving. Ninth, one constantly delights in seeking the Dharma. Tenth, upon the dissolution of the body and the end of life, one is reborn in wholesome destinies. Virtuous ones, this is called obtaining ten kinds of merits by refraining from sexual misconduct. If one can dedicate these roots of goodness toward unsurpassable bodhi, before long, when this person attains unsurpassable wisdom and reaches bodhi, in that land there will be no sexual organs, nor will there be female faculties; sexual desire will not be practiced, and all will be born through spontaneous transformation.'
