The Buddha said, 'By refraining from divisive speech, one obtains ten kinds of merits. What are the ten? First, an indestructible equality of body. Second, an indestructible equality of retinue. Third, an indestructible equality of good friends. Fourth, an indestructible equality of faith. Fifth, an indestructible equality of the Dharma. Sixth, an indestructible equality of deportment. Seventh, an indestructible equality of śamatha. Eighth, an indestructible equality of samādhi. Ninth, an indestructible equality of patience. Tenth, upon the dissolution of the body and the end of life, one is reborn in wholesome destinies. Virtuous ones, this is called obtaining ten kinds of merits by refraining from divisive speech. If one can dedicate these roots of goodness toward unsurpassable bodhi, before long, when this person attains unsurpassable wisdom and reaches bodhi, in that land, all of one's retinue will not be capable of being destroyed by any māras, enemies, or rival factions.'
