The Buddha said, 'By refraining from false speech, one obtains ten kinds of merits. What are the ten? First, the multitude of people vouch for one, and all believe what one says. Second, in all places, down to the devas, one's utterances hit the mark. Third, a fragrance issues from the mouth like an utpala flower. Fourth, among humans and devas, one uniquely serves as a witness. Fifth, the multitude of people love and respect one, free from all doubts. Sixth, one constantly speaks the truth. Seventh, the mind is pure. Eighth, one is constantly free from flattery, and one's speech inevitably accords with the capacity [of the listener]. Ninth, one constantly has much joy. Tenth, upon the dissolution of the body and the end of life, one is reborn in wholesome destinies. Virtuous ones, this is called obtaining ten kinds of merits by refraining from false speech. If one can dedicate these roots of goodness toward unsurpassable bodhi, before long, when this person attains unsurpassable wisdom and reaches bodhi, in that land there will be no sexual organs, and all kinds of marvelous precious fragrances will constantly fill that land.'
