The Buddha said: 'If anyone who is not a śramaṇa claims to be a śramaṇa, or not practicing pure conduct claims to practice pure conduct, on this great earth there is not even a place for him to spit or blow his nose, much less to raise or lower his feet, come or go, bend or stretch. Why is this? In the past, great kings took this great earth and bestowed it upon those who keep the precepts and possess virtuous conduct, so that they might practice the Middle Way. For this precept-breaking bhikṣu, all faithful offerings are unmerited by him, let alone the premises of saṃgha rooms; robes, bowls, bedding, medicine, and faithful offerings should not be received by him. If a precept-breaking bhikṣu—as if dividing a single hair into a hundred parts—if an evil bhikṣu receives from people a faithful offering the size of one hair's division, in proportion to that hair's division received, it brings harm to the donor.'
