'Therefore, the Buddha said to the bhikṣus: Gain and offerings are a great disaster and calamity, capable of creating obstacles and difficulties; even an arhat may be obstructed and troubled by gain and offerings.' The bhikṣus asked, 'What sort of obstacles can these cause?' The Buddha said, 'The harm of gain and offerings can break the skin, break the flesh, break the bones, and break the marrow: it breaks the skin of pure precepts, the flesh of dhyāna-concentration, the bones of wisdom, and the marrow of the subtle and wonderful wholesome mind.'
