Furthermore, the *Upāsaka-śīla-sūtra* says: "If there is a person who delights in drinking liquor, that person in the present life is prone to losing property and wealth, suffers many illnesses of body and mind, constantly delights in quarreling, has evil repute spread far and wide, loses wisdom, has a mind without shame or remorse, obtains an ugly complexion and poor vitality, is constantly rebuked by all, is disliked by people, and cannot cultivate goodness. This is called the evil retribution of drinking liquor in the present life. After casting off this body, one resides in hell, suffering immeasurable afflictions of hunger, thirst, and the like. This is called the fruit of evil karma in future lives. If one obtains a human body, one's mind is constantly deranged and cannot fix mindfulness on contemplating wholesome dharmas. By the force of this one evil cause and condition, all external material requisites for living are completely ruined."
