Furthermore, the *Śrāmaṇerikā-śīla-sūtra* says: "One must not drink liquor; one must not be fond of liquor; one must not taste liquor. Liquor has thirty-six faults: losing the Way, ruining the family, endangering the body, and losing life—all stem from it. It pulls one east and drags one west, takes one south and sets one north. One cannot recite scriptures, does not revere the Three Honoured Ones, treats teachers and friends flippantly, and is unfilial to parents. The mind is closed and the thoughts are obstructed; life after life one is foolish, does not encounter the Great Way, and the mind lacks understanding. Therefore, do not drink liquor. If one wishes to depart from the five aggregates, the five desires, and the five hindrances, to attain the five supernatural powers, and to cross beyond the five destinies, therefore do not drink liquor."
