As the Twelve Categories of Birth and Death Sūtra states: The Buddha said, 'Human death has twelve categories. What are the twelve? The first is death without residue, which refers to arhats who are free from attachment. The second is crossing beyond death, which refers to anāgāmins who do not return. The third is death with residue, which refers to sakṛdāgāmins who depart and return. The fourth is death of learning to cross over, which refers to srotāpannas who see the path. The fifth is death without deceit, which refers to people of the eight stages. The sixth is death with joyful mind, which refers to those who practice one-pointedness of mind. The seventh is frequent death, which refers to people of evil morality. The eighth is death with regret, which refers to ordinary worldlings. The ninth is untimely death, which refers to the lonely and destitute. The tenth is death of bound attachment, which refers to animals. The eleventh is death of burning and scorching, which refers to the hells. The twelfth is death of hunger and thirst, which refers to hungry ghosts. Monks should clearly understand this and not be negligent.'
