At that time, the Buddha told the monks, "Regarding such sublime Dharma, contemplating nutriment comprises nine matters. In the human realm there are four nutriments: first, coarse material nutriment; second, contact nutriment; third, volitional nutriment; and fourth, consciousness nutriment. Furthermore, there are five kinds which are supramundane nutriments: first, meditation nutriment (dhyānāhāra); second, aspiration nutriment (praṇidhānāhāra); third, mindfulness nutriment (smṛtyāhāra); fourth, the eight-liberations nutriment (aṣṭavimokṣāhāra); and fifth, joy nutriment (prītyāhāra). These are the tokens of the supramundane. You should together focus your mindfulness on relinquishing and eliminating the four kinds of [mundane] nutriment and seek to realize the supramundane nutriments."
