Furthermore, a [secular] book states: What you do not desire for yourself, do not do to others. One should know that the internal and external teachings are fundamentally identical: although their forms differ as black and white, their established practices are no different. If one goes against this principle, one becomes just like the vulgar crowd, so how could one rely on the internal or external? As a sūtra states: The Buddha preaches the Dharma for sentient beings, severing the dark delusions of ignorance, just like a skilled physician administering medicine according to the disease—this is called the internal teaching. Furthermore, a [secular] book states: The Way of Heaven has no personal favorites; it only sides with the benevolent—this is called the external teaching. Furthermore, if one who has gone forth can contemplate suffering, emptiness, impermanence, and non-self, stay far away from birth-and-death, and resolve to seek transcendence of the world, this is relying on the internal. If one goes against this practice, one turns into an external worldly person. If a householder can weary of and abandon worldly sentiments, admire and aspire to lofty intentions, exclusively venerate the Triratna, cultivate the four virtues, and put into practice filial piety, brotherly affection, benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, chastity, harmony, love, and respect, and can carry out such practices, they conversely become like the internal. If they violate this principle, they return to being the same as non-Buddhists. If a worldly person can follow the internal teaching, they will realize the true principle; their mind will constantly accord with the Way, and they will gradually advance on the supreme path and arrive at bodhi. Having understood this, if one wishes to carry out this practice, one need only humble oneself and accord virtue to others, like a cloth wiping away dust, taking the grime onto oneself and offering cleanliness to others. Therefore, a sūtra states: One who retreats and gains it achieves the Buddha Path.
