Furthermore, the Faju piyu jing states: In the past, before Rāhula had attained the Way, his mental disposition was coarse and rough, and his speech lacked honesty. The Buddha instructed Rāhula, 'Go to the Xianti monastery to stay, guard your mouth, restrain your thoughts, and diligently practice the sūtras and precepts.' Rāhula received the instruction, paid homage, and departed. Staying for ninety days, he felt shame and repented day and night without ceasing. The Buddha went to see him; Rāhula was joyful and stepped forward to pay homage to the Buddha. The Buddha said to Rāhula, 'Take water in the basin and wash my feet.' Rāhula received the instruction, and after washing the Buddha's feet, the Buddha said to Rāhula, 'Can this water still be used for drinking and eating or not?' Rāhula said, 'It can no longer be used. This water was originally pure, but now, having washed your feet, it has received dust and dirt, so it cannot be used.' The Buddha said to Rāhula, 'You are also like this. Although you are my son and the grandson of a king, having renounced worldly honor and emoluments to become a śramaṇa, you do not contemplate diligence, restrain your body, or guard your mouth; the defilements of the three poisons fill your breast, just like this water which can no longer be used. Even if the basin's water is discarded, the basin is also unfit to hold food, because it has previously held impurity. You are also like this: your mouth lacks honesty, your disposition is stubborn, you do not contemplate diligence, and you have previously received a bad reputation, just like a washbasin not fit to hold food.' The Buddha nudged the basin with his toe so that it tumbled several times, [and asked,] 'Do you cherish it or not?' Rāhula said to the Buddha, 'As a vessel for washing feet, though I may cherish it, I am not attached to it.' The Buddha said to Rāhula, 'You are also like this. Although you are a śramaṇa, you do not restrain your body and mouth, harming many people; when your body dies and your consciousness departs, you will transmigrate through the three evil paths, and the worthy and noble will not cherish you, just as you have said.' Hearing this, Rāhula was ashamed and terrified; deeply moved, he spurred himself on, carving it into his bones and never forgetting it. Diligent and gentle, harboring patience like the earth, he immediately attained the path of an arhat (summary).
