爾時比丘。更具說已。珠師即開鵝腹而還得珠。既見珠已。便舉聲號哭。語比丘言。汝護鵝命不惜於身。使我造此非法之事。即說偈言。

At that time, after the monk had explained everything in full detail, the pearl borer cut open the goose's belly and recovered the pearl. Having seen the pearl, he raised his voice and wept bitterly, saying to the monk: 'You protected the goose's life and did not spare your own body, causing me to commit this unlawful deed!' He then spoke a verse:
