10.94

我曾往昔來　造作眾惡業
或得生人道　竊盜婬他妻
王法受刑戮　計算不能數
復受地獄苦　如是亦難計
假使此日光　曝我身命乾
我要持佛戒　終不中毀犯
假使遇惡獸　爴裂我身手
終不敢毀犯　釋師子禁戒
我寧持戒死　不願犯戒生

"From ancient times in the past, / We have committed many evil karmas; / Or having obtained birth in the human realm, / We stole and committed adultery with others' wives, / Suffering execution under the king's law / Countless times beyond reckoning; / And the suffering undergone in hell / Is likewise difficult to calculate. / Even if this sunlight / Scorches our bodies and lives until dry, / We must uphold the Buddha's precepts / And never violate them midway. / Even if we encounter ferocious beasts / That tear our bodies and hands to pieces, / We would never dare violate / The prohibitive precepts of the Lion of the Śākyas. / We would rather die upholding the precepts / Than live by violating the precepts."
