Furthermore, the Ekottarika-āgama states: At that time, the Bhagavat addressed the bhikṣus: 'There are three causes and conditions for consciousness to come to the place and take conception. First, the mother has desire, and the parents come together in one place, yet the external consciousness is not yet due to arrive, then conception does not take place; if consciousness arrives, but the parents do not come together, a fetus is not formed. Second, if the mother has no desire while the father's desire is intense, and the mother is not very earnest, then a fetus is not formed. Third, if the parents come together in one place, and the mother's desire is blazing while the father is not very earnest, then a fetus is not formed. Furthermore, there are three types: first, if the parents come together in one place, the father has a wind illness and the mother has a cold illness, then a fetus is not formed; second, if the mother has a wind illness and the father has a cold illness, then a fetus is not formed; third, if in the father's body water-qi is predominantly excessive while the mother does not have this affliction, then a fetus is not formed. Furthermore, there are three types: first, if the parents come together in one place, the father's physiognomy indicates children while the mother's physiognomy indicates no children, then a fetus is not formed; second, if the mother's physiognomy indicates children while the father's physiognomy indicates no children, then a fetus is not formed; third, if both parents' physiognomies indicate no children, then a fetus is not formed. Furthermore, there are three types: first, if at a time when the conscious spirit approaches the womb, the father is traveling and absent, then a fetus is not formed; second, if at a time when the parents ought to come together in one place, the mother is traveling far away and absent, then a fetus is not formed; third, if the parents are together and not traveling, then conception occurs. Furthermore, there are three types: first, if at a time when the parents ought to come together in one place, the father suffers from a severe illness, even if at that time the conscious spirit approaches, conception does not occur; second, if the mother suffers from a severe illness, then a fetus is not formed; third, if both parents suffer from illness, then a fetus is not formed. If the parents are without affliction, the conscious spirit approaches, and both parents' physiognomies indicate children, then a fetus is formed.'
