Furthermore, within the womb, either through the force of prior karma, or through the compliant winds generated by the mother's failure to avoid unhealthy imbalances, this fetus undergoes transformations in its hair, color, skin, or other limbs and parts at birth. As for anomalous growth of the hair: it is due to evil and unwholesome karma performed in previous lives capable of evoking this [result], and because its mother frequently indulged in the flavors of ashes, salt, and the like in food or drink, causing this fetus to have sparse hair. As for anomalous growth of bodily color: it is due to causes of prior karma as explained above, and because its mother approached smoke and heat as present conditions, causing that fetus to be born dark and murky in color. Furthermore, if the mother stays in extremely cold rooms and the like, it causes that fetus to be born extremely pale in color. Furthermore, through its mother eating much hot food, it causes that fetus to be born extremely red in color. As for anomalous growth of the skin: it is due to causes of past karma as explained above, and because its mother frequently indulged in sexual desire as a present condition, causing that fetus to be born with bad skin such as favus, scabies, or leprosy. As for anomalous growth of the limbs and parts: it is due to causes of prior karma as explained above, and because its mother frequently engaged in bodily postures of running and jumping, and failed to avoid unhealthy imbalances as present conditions, causing that fetus to be born deficient in its sense faculties and limbs. Furthermore, if that fetus is to become female, it abides in the mother's right flank, resting on her back and facing her belly. If it is to become male, it abides in the mother's left flank, resting on her belly and facing her back. Furthermore, when this fetus reaches full maturity, the mother cannot bear this heavy fetus, and internal winds then arise, causing great suffering and distress. Furthermore, the wind of emergence generated by the karmic retribution of this fetus arises, causing its head to face downward and its feet to face upward, wrapped in the amniotic membrane as it heads toward the birth canal. When it is actually emerging, the amniotic membrane then tears and divides under the two armpits. When it emerges from the birth canal, this is called the stage of actual birth. After birth, it gradually touches the places that generate contact, namely eye-contact and so forth up to mind-contact.
