問曰。云何名為五蓋。答曰一貪欲蓋。二瞋恚蓋。三睡眠蓋。四掉悔蓋。五疑蓋。

Question: What are called the five hindrances? Answer: First, the hindrance of sensual desire (kāmacchanda); second, the hindrance of ill will (vyāpāda); third, the hindrance of sloth and torpor (styāna-middha); fourth, the hindrance of restlessness and remorse (auddhatya-kaukṛtya); fifth, the hindrance of doubt (vicikitsā).
