“Your body is made of dry bones standing erect,
wrapped around with skin and flesh;
filled within with impurities,
not a single thing is good.
A leather bag holding feces and urine,
with nine orifices constantly discharging;
like a ghost without anything commendable,
how could you deem yourself precious?
Your body is like a walking latrine,
covered over with thin skin;
cast far away by the wise,
just as one leaves a latrine behind.
If people knew your body
as I loathe and detest it,
all would stay far away from it,
just as one avoids a cesspool.
You adorn your body
with flowers, incense, and gem necklaces;
what ordinary fools covet and crave
does not delude the wise.
You are a heap of impurity,
a gathering of all foul and evil things;
like an adorned privy,
foolish people consider it fine.
Your ribs adhere to the spine
like rafters resting on beams and purlins;
the five viscera are inside the abdomen,
impure like a basket of dung.
Your body is like a house of filth,
treasured greedily by foolish men;
adorned with pearls and gem necklaces,
its exterior is fair like a painted vase.
If one attempts to dye empty space,
from beginning to end it can never take the color;
you wish to come and bewitch me,
like a moth throwing itself into the fire.
All the poisons of sensual desires
I have now extinguished entirely;
the five desires are already left far behind,
the net of Māra is already broken and torn.
My mind is like empty space,
attached to nothing whatsoever;
even if celestial desires were to come,
they could not defile my mind.”
