Fourth, explaining that practitioners of a mind of maitrī and few desires should not eat meat. As that sūtra says: "A bodhisattva, seeking escape from saṃsāra, should focus solely on the practice of maitrī-karuṇā, having few desires and being content, detesting worldly suffering, and swiftly seeking liberation. If one leaves clamor and approaches seclusion, dwelling in a śmaśāna or an araṇya, sitting alone among graves or beneath trees to contemplate, one observes all worldly things as having nothing delightful: regarding wife and children as shackles; regarding palaces and pavilions as prisons; regarding treasures as heaps of dung; regarding food and drink as pus and blood; and accepting food and drink as applying ointment to an ulcerated sore. Maintaining life in this state, keeping thoughts tied to the noble path and not craving flavor, one abandons and does not eat liquor, meat, leeks, scallions, garlic, chives, or foul odors. If one is like this, this is true cultivation, worthy of receiving the offerings of all humans and devas. If one does not generate revulsion toward the world, craves various tastes, and consumes liquor, meat, and pungent herbs, one should not receive the faithful alms of the world."
