Fifth, explaining that those who eat meat were all evil rākṣasas in the past; because of their conditioning (vāsanā), they still crave meat now. Therefore, one should not eat meat. As that sūtra says: 'There are sentient beings who in the past cultivated immeasurable causes and conditions, and with slight wholesome roots get to hear my Dharma and with faithful minds go forth into homelessness (pravrajyā) within my Dharma. Having in the past been the kin of rākṣasas, or born among tigers, wolves, lions, and cats, although they are now within my Dharma, due to the residual conditioning of meat-eating, when they see those who eat meat they are delighted to draw close to them. They enter cities, towns, hamlets, stūpas, and monasteries, drinking alcohol and devouring meat, taking this as joy and delight. When devas and humans look upon them, they are no different from rākṣasas fighting over and devouring corpses. Yet they do not know it themselves: they have already fallen from my assembly and become the kin of rākṣasas. Although they wear the kāṣāya and have shaved their hair and beards, when living beings see them, fear arises in their minds just as if dreading rākṣasas.' This explains that meat-eaters all come from having previously been rākṣasas, lions, tigers, wolves, and cats; therefore, one should cut it off.
