Eighth, explaining that from those who eat meat, all devas, worthy ones, and noble ones stay far away, while evil spirits terrify them. Therefore, practitioners should not eat meat. Therefore, bodhisattvas, in order to see the noble ones, should cultivate maitrī-karuṇā and should not eat meat. Mahāmati, for one who eats meat, sleep is suffering, and waking up is also suffering. If in dreams they see various evils, their hair stands on end in terror and their mind is constantly unsettled. Because they lack a compassionate mind, they are deficient in wholesome powers. If they are alone in a deserted place, non-humans often lie in wait for an opportunity against them; tigers, wolves, and lions also come stalking, wishing to devour their flesh. Their minds are constantly terrified and never attain peace.'
