19.40

又華嚴經云。人欲終時見中陰相。若行惡業者。見三惡受苦。或見閻羅持諸兵杖囚執將去。或聞苦聲。若行善者。見諸天宮殿。伎女莊嚴。遊戲快樂。如是勝事。

The *Avataṃsaka-sūtra* also states: "When a person is about to die, they see the signs of the intermediate existence (antarābhava). If they have practiced bad karma, they see the sufferings in the three bad destinations, or they see Yama holding various weapons to capture and lead them away, or they hear sounds of agony. If they have practiced good karma, they see heavenly palaces, adorned with celestial maidens, playing and sporting in delight, and such excellent things."
