郊特生曰。魂氣歸於天。形魄歸於地。故祭求諸陰陽之義。祭義曰。氣也者神之盛。魂也者鬼之盛。
The 'Jiaotesheng' chapter says: 'The hun-breath returns to heaven, while the bodily po returns to earth. Therefore, sacrifice seeks the meanings of yin and yang.' The 'Jiyi' chapter says: 'Breath is the flourishing of the spirit (shen); hun is the flourishing of the ghost (gui).'
