The Avadānaśataka also states: Formerly, when the Buddha was in the world, there was an elder in the city of Kapilavastu whose family was immensely wealthy, with boundless and incalculable riches and treasures. A son was born to him, whose appearance was handsome and rare in the world. Sandalwood fragrance issued from all the pores of his body, and the fragrance of utpala flowers came from his mouth. His parents were boundlessly overjoyed upon seeing this, and on that account named him Candanagandha. As he gradually grew older, he sought the Buddha to leave home and attained the fruit of an arhat. The bhikṣus saw this and addressed the Buddha, saying, "What merit did this Candanagandha plant in past lives, that he was born into a noble clan, had fragrance issue from his body and mouth, and moreover met the Bhagavat, left home, and attained the Way?" The Buddha told the bhikṣus, "Ninety-one kalpas in the past, after the Buddha Vipaśyin entered nirvāṇa, there was a king named Bandhumat who collected his relics, built a four-jewelled stūpa one yojana high, and made offerings to it. At that time, an elder entered the Buddha's stūpa, saw that the ground was broken and decayed, and mixed mud to coat and repair it. He scattered powdered sandalwood incense upon it, made a vow, and departed. Due to this merit, from that time onward for ninety-one kalpas he did not fall into the evil destinies. Among gods and humans, his body and mouth were constantly fragrant, and he enjoyed blessed happiness, until now, when he met me, left home, and attained the Way."
