As the Daśabhūmika-vibhāṣā states: In this household, [towards one's] parents, siblings, wife and children, relatives, carriages, horses, and other possessions, greed and craving increase without satisfaction. The household is hard to fill, like the ocean swallowing streams. The household knows no contentment, like fire consuming firewood. The household has no rest, discursive thoughts continuing incessantly. The household is by nature suffering, like an enemy falsely acting as a friend. The household is an obstacle, capable of impeding the noble path. The household is strife and disorder, [where people] mutually conflict and dispute. The household is full of wrath, scolding and rebuking over good and bad. The household is impermanent; though lasting long, it will be lost and destroyed. The household is a host of sufferings, rushing after things to guard them. The household is a place of suspicion, just like hostile bandits. The household is an inversion, greedily clinging to provisional designations. The household is an actor, with various false adornments. The household is mutability; what meets must part. The household is borrowed; it has no real substance. The household is like a dream in sleep; wealth and nobility are lost. The household is like morning dew, vanishing in an instant. The household is like a drop of honey, its sweetness exceedingly slight. The household is like a thicket of thorns, the barbs of desire wounding people. The household is like an iron worm, discursive thoughts constantly gnawing. Afflictions such as these cannot be fully recounted. Therefore, a lay bodhisattva should contemplate in this way and know the faults of the household. A household's wife, children, relatives, slaves, servants, wealth, and goods cannot provide rescue or refuge; they are not my good friends. Therefore, one ought to abandon and leave them swiftly. Furthermore, from beginningless time all sentient beings have alternately been father and son to one another in the six destinies; how could closeness or distance be fixed? Thus a verse says:
