Furthermore, the Mahābodhisattvapiṭaka-sūtra says: 'Śāriputra, if there are sentient beings who relish sexual desire for men, women, wives, concubines, and the forms of women, you should know that this is just like relishing a hailstorm of gravel and stones; it is just like relishing the blade of a sharp knife; it is just like relishing a red-hot iron ball; it is just like relishing sitting on a bed of red-hot iron; it is just like relishing a footstool of red-hot iron. Śāriputra, if anyone relishes flower garlands and fragrant ointments, it is just like relishing garlands of red-hot iron, and it is also like relishing smearing the body with feces and urine. Śāriputra, if anyone grasps at dwellings and houses, you should know that they grasp at a cauldron of red-hot iron. If anyone grasps at slaves and servants, you should know that they grasp at the evil wardens of hell. If anyone grasps at elephants, horses, camels, donkeys, cattle, sheep, chickens, and pigs, you should know that they grasp at the black and brindled hounds of hell, and they also grasp at imperial guard soldiers covering a hundred yojanas. To sum up: if anyone grasps at wives, concubines, sons, daughters, and the sexual desire for women, you should know that this is just like grasping at an aggregation of all sufferings, worries, griefs, and afflictions. Śāriputra, it would be better to lean against a bed of red-hot iron a thousand yojanas in size—a bed extremely hot, burning all over, with fierce flames blazing brightly—than to look from afar with a mind of defiled attachment at the appearance of wives, concubines, and women provided by one's parents for sexual desire, much less to approach and embrace them. Why is that? Śāriputra, you should know that woman is the root of all suffering, the root of obstacles, the root of slaughter, the root of bondage, the root of worry and grief, the root of enmity and opposition, and the root of congenital blindness. You should know that woman extinguishes the eye of noble wisdom. You should know that woman is like red-hot iron flowers strewn upon the ground, upon which one's feet tread. You should know that woman spreads and increases all evil natures. Śāriputra, for what reason is she called "woman" (fùrén)? The term fù means "to impose a heavy burden". Why? Because she causes sentient beings to receive a heavy burden; because she causes sentient beings to bear a heavy burden and go about; because she causes sentient beings to shoulder a heavy burden and wander everywhere; because she causes the minds of sentient beings to be weary and tormented under this heavy burden; because she causes sentient beings to be scorched and oppressed by this heavy burden; because she causes sentient beings to be harmed by this heavy burden. Śāriputra, again, by what reason is she called fù? What is called fù is the place where all sentient beings deliver their tribute; the place where the slaves of craving are swept away and drowned; the place to which those who comply with women pay their tax; the place where those charmed by women are infatuated; the place of refuge for those conquered by women; the place of reliance for those bent by women; the place of laxity for those under woman's control; the place of exhaustion and torment for those enslaved by women; the place of leaning and looking up to for those who follow women's whims. Śāriputra, it is on account of such causes and conditions as these that all such places are called "woman".'
