9.38

復有一鬼言。我腹極大如甕。咽喉手脚甚細如針。不得飲食。何因。此苦。目連答言。汝前世時作聚落主。自恃豪貴飲酒縱橫。輕欺餘人奪其飲食。飢困眾生故受此苦。

Another ghost said: 'My belly is extremely large, like a vat, while my throat, hands, and feet are as thin as needles, so that I can get neither food nor drink. What is the cause of this suffering?' Maudgalyāyana replied: 'In your former life, you were a village chieftain. Relying on your nobility and wealth, you drank wine unrestrainedly, despised and cheated other people, and seized their food and drink. Because you starved and distressed sentient beings, you suffer this pain.'
