9.39

復有一鬼言。我常趣溷欲噉食糞。有大群鬼捉杖驅我。不得近廁。口中爛臭。飢困無賴。何因如此。目連答言。汝前世時。作佛圖主。有諸白衣。供養眾僧供辦食具。汝以麁供設客僧。細者自食。故受此苦。

Another ghost said: 'I constantly go to the latrine wanting to eat excrement, but a large troop of ghosts wielding sticks drive me away, so that I cannot approach the privy. My mouth is rotten and foul, and I am starved, distressed, and without recourse. Why is it like this?' Maudgalyāyana replied: 'In your former life, you were a monastery warden. There were laypeople who made offerings to the Saṃgha and prepared food vessels, but you served the coarse provisions to visiting monks while eating the fine food yourself. Therefore you suffer this pain.'
