The commentary says: For instance, ordinary beings and practitioners of the two vehicles see Amitābha Buddha in a defiled land, while the bodhisattvas and others see Amitābha Buddha in a pure land. According to these two accounts, the reward land is uniformly purely pure, whereas the response land is both defiled and pure. Therefore the Pure Land Treatise (*Sukhāvatīvyūhopadeśa*) says that there are five kinds of lands: First, the purely pure land, existing only in the Buddha fruition. Second, the pure-defiled land, meaning mostly pure and little defiled, which pertains to the eighth stage (*bhūmi*) and above. Third, the land of equal parts pure and defiled, meaning from the first stage up to the seventh stage. Fourth, the defiled-pure land, meaning mostly defiled and little pure, which pertains to the stages before the *bhūmis*—the nature stage. Fifth, the mixed and defiled land, meaning those who have not entered the nature stage. The fifth kind of person sees the last one and does not see the previous four. The fourth kind of person sees the last two and does not see the previous three. The third kind of person sees the last three and does not see the previous two. The second kind of person sees the last four and does not see the first one. The first, the Buddha, completely knows and completely sees all five lands above and below.
