Furthermore, the Maitreyaparipṛcchā-śāstra says: These ten unwholesome paths of karma and all evil dharmas all arise from greed, anger, and delusion. As for taking life arising based on the three poisons: If it arises based on a mind of greed, taking life for the sake of skin, flesh, or wealth is called arising based on greed. If it arises based on a mind of anger, killing an enemy out of anger is called arising based on anger. If it arises based on a mind of delusion, as when some people say that killing snakes, scorpions, and the like brings no sin because they cause suffering to sentient beings; or as some say, like the Persians, that killing old parents and the gravely ill incurs no sinful retribution—this is called arising based on delusion.
As for stealing arising based on the three poisons: If it arises based on a mind of greed, stealing for oneself, for another, or for food and drink is called arising based on greed. If it arises based on a mind of anger, stealing things from a person one hates or from what that hated person loves is called arising based on anger. If it arises based on a mind of delusion, as when a brāhmaṇa says, 'All things on the whole earth belong only to me. Why? Because that king formerly gave them to me; since I lacked power, other clans seized them for their use. Therefore, when I take them, it is my own property and is not called stealing'—this is called arising based on a mind of delusion.
