Furthermore, the ten unwholesome paths of karma of body, speech, and mind all possess preceding and succeeding retinues. What does this mean? For instance, a person generates the intention to take the life of this sentient being, and consequently goes on to take the lives of other sentient beings; or, wishing to sacrifice to the gods, kills sentient beings and immediately seizes others' goods; or, wishing to kill that man, also violates his wife, forming such an intention, and further makes that wife kill her own husband; or with various contentious speeches breaks up his relatives, never speaking the truth; or develops greed for those goods, and then develops anger toward that person; and in order to kill that person, generates such wrong views, increasing wrong views to take his life, and further wishes to kill his wife, sons, daughters, and the like. Proceeding in this order, he fully completes the ten unwholesome paths of karma. Such karmas are called the preceding retinue. All ten unwholesome paths of karma should also be known to be like this.
