'There are furthermore five kinds of superior fruits: giving to one's parents, to the sick, to a Dharma master, and to a bodhisattva results in superior retributions. Parents care for one with benevolence, nurturing one's physical body and life; therefore, the giver obtains a superior retribution. Furthermore, the sick are solitary and pitiful; on this account, giving to the sick with a compassionate mind brings a superior retribution. Furthermore, an expounder of the Dharma can give birth to the dharmakāya and cause the dharmakāya to grow, eternally discerning good and evil, the straight and the crooked, the inverted and the non-inverted; therefore, the giver obtains a superior retribution. Furthermore, all bodhisattvas are able to gather and benefit sentient beings, giving rise to compassion, and serve as the cause for the Triratna to be gathered without interruption; on this account, giving to a bodhisattva brings a superior retribution. Because a bodhisattva generates a valiant mind with great power of compassionate vows, it is unlike other merit whose mind is narrow and inferior.'
